My Take on the Latest Trends in Surface Pattern Design

Hey friends! As someone who is looking to have their designs licensed, I believe that being aware of the latest trends in surface pattern design is important. And although they may be trending now, make sure you design what you love and what makes you happy regardless of trends!

Anyway, currently, I'm noticing three trends that are really standing out: florals and botanicals, muted tones, and bold geometrics.

As someone who loves florals, I'm happy to see that they're still in style. I create both dainty small-scale prints and oversized statement pieces, and I believe there's a floral or botanical pattern for everyone. Check out the example of my work below to see what I mean.

Muted colour palettes are also really popular right now. After the last few chaotic years, it's no surprise that people are craving a sense of calm and tranquility in their surroundings. Soft pastels and earthy neutrals offer a soothing and comforting atmosphere. Take a look at the beautiful example from artist Marie-Lise below.

But don't be afraid to add a little personality to your designs! Bold and bright geometric patterns are also making a comeback, with a nod to retro designs. These patterns are playful and eye-catching and are perfect for adding a pop of personality to any space or product. Check out the example from artist Elizabeth Olwen below.

As a surface pattern designer, it's crucial to stay on top of the latest trends, but it's just as important to stay true to your own unique style. It's easy to get influenced by all the beautiful artwork out there, but remember to experiment with different colours, motifs, and styles to create patterns that truly represent you.

So whether you're into classic florals, calming muted tones, or retro-inspired geometrics, there's a trend for everyone. Go ahead and experiment with different styles until you find the one that feels right for you. Don't be afraid to make it your own and let your creativity shine!
